Christian conquers time trial, moves to 5th overall

CvvIt was a final hour to behold at this year’s final time trial. Team Garmin’s Christian Vande Velde finished the second-to-last stage in an impressive 1:04.55, fourth best on the day, just one spot ahead of teammate David Millar and a minute faster than Cadel Evans, an excellent time trialist himself. And rather than fading in the final days after fighting through the mountains, Christian continued to push the limits. With one day of cycling left in this year’s saga, he found power when he needed it most and moved into fifth place overall.

Meanwhile, Carlos Sastre stood up to the challengers who were supposed to gain time in an individual stage and were poised to strip the yellow jersey off his back. With champagne bottles bursting at the seams and throngs of fans waiting in Paris, Sastre will lead the parade to the Champs-Élysées with a firm grip on this year’s crown.
