Challenge Complete: Father/Son Team Sets the Bar in Boating Race

DSC_0098In June, we told you about a father/son team that was setting out on quite the adventure: circumnavigating Vancouver Island non-stop and without refueling.  A challenge issued by Pacific Yachting magazine, Larry and Nick Graf decided to set sail and attempt to set the bar for a feat that had not been completed.  As an owner of a production powerboat of 40 feet or less, the parameters of the boat for the challenge, Larry and Nick had to circumnavigate Vancouver Island in the least amount of time using only the fuel that could be carried on board.

When the challenge was completed, the Grafs completed the 641-mile (1,068-kilometer) challenge in 47 hours, 5 minutes, on 267 gallons (1,009 liters) of fuel, finishing June 22, 2014. The modern 32-foot power proa catamaran they drove averaged 5.6 gallons per hour at cruising speed for the trip.

What a grand adventure,” said Aspen Power Catamaran founder and president, Larry Graf. “When we heard about Pacific Yachting’s challenge I knew that I had to give it a try, and we’re proud to hold the first record for circumnavigating Vancouver Island non-stop and without a refuel. I’d love to see someone else give it a try!”

For the challenge, Larry and Nick utilized Garmin electronics to aide on their journey.  Their boat was equipped with a GPSMAP 4210GMR 18 HD radarGHC 10, autopilot and AIS 600.
