Today is National Aviation Day in the United States, a day where aviation enthusiasts celebrate the fastest (and arguably, most fascinating!) mode of transportation – air travel. Today calls for a celebration for how far the aviation industry has come and all that air travel has contributed.

Former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt established National Aviation Day in 1939 in honor of Orville Wright’s birthday, born August 19, 1871 (who was still alive at the time the holiday was named). Wilbur and Orville Wright would be in their 30’s when they would take to the skies for the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight on December 17, 1903.

As pilots, many of us celebrate daily and introduce aviation to others by taking them flying. To me, that is what flying is all about – sharing it with others. On May 25, 1910 Orville Wright did just this. He made two unique flights, the first with his brother Wilbur as his passenger. Their six-minute flight would be the first (and last) time the two brothers would ever fly together. For the second flight, Orville would take Milton Wright, his 82-year old father flying. Similar to Orville’s flight with his brother, this too would be Milton’s first and last flight, ever. As Orville gained altitude, it is noted that his father cried out, “Higher, Orville, higher!”

While many of us will take to the skies today, tomorrow and for years to come, it’s important we continue to share this unique passion with others as often as possible. In conjunction with FLYING magazine and the “Flying is…” Garmin VIRB Video Contest, we’re hoping to do just that. Just as Orville and so many of us do every day, share your passion for flying with the world! Videos must be between 30 seconds and three minutes long and may be featured on flyingmag.com and FLYING’s editorial eNewsletter. Even more, the creator of the best video will win a Garmin VIRB Elite and D2 Pilot Watch.

Here at Garmin, we offer our thanks and appreciation to our fellow aviation enthusiasts, pioneers and pilots and just as Orville and Wilbur did, don’t forget to share National Aviation Day with someone else, today!
