Caddy Confidential: Approach G5 and G3 put through the paces

Review scorecard stats ApproachG3tilt While Garmin bloggers Jake and Peg were testing out the new Forerunner 110 in a distinctly Greek sounding activity known commonly as a "half-marathon," your humble caddy was teeing up the first round of golf for the 2010 season. Despite a weather forecast predicting a very Canadian-like day in the mid-forties with rain, yours truly packed the ol' trusty Approach G5, a shiny new Approach G3 and a good umbrella and headed to the course.

The plan was to play the front nine with the G5 to test out the new Stat Tracking feature, and then give the G3 a whirl on the back nine. The good news; Stat Tracking works better than advertised. Tracking GIR, putts per round and fairways hit was quick and easy. However, it was humbling to see how not-so-far the ball carried in sub-forty degree weather with a stiff headwind (drives averaged a muscular 213 yards). The better news; both the G5 and G3 are not only completely waterproof, but hail and sleet proof as well. Finally, the G3's Distance Measure feature works great if you're measuring how far a nine iron can fly when it slings out of your slippery hands during a practice swing (19 yards – backwards).

With the golf season officially underway, be sure to check back in soon. We'll be making more course updates and product announcements, talking golf, and talking all things Garmin. Or you can catch up-to-the-minute updates on Jake's Twitter feed. 'Til next time, be sure to pack your umbrella!
