Ben battles wind during tempo run in Boulder

First, you have to realize that the workout will not be what you planned. That’s OK, you can still get the benefit, so relax and have fun with it. Go mainly by heart rate, but make sure you pay attention to your perceived effort and make sure the two aren’t too far off from normal (e.g. if you normally run easy at 130 bpm, but you're running easy and your HR is 145 bpm, then try backing off a bit). Remember that unusually hot weather or very cold weather will elevate your heart rate at a given effort. Balancing your heart rate data with your perceived effort will let you most closely mirror your workout goals – even if you’re being blown off the trail.

Second, have fun. Unusual training situations provide an opportunity to relax and enjoy a situation that will be far more memorable than a typical workout. Using the Forerunner 310XT for this run in Boulder, I knew my heart rate was sky high, but my pace was slower than any of my previous tempo runs. Still, I had a huge smile on my face as I ran nearly sideways, trying not to turn into Mary Poppins.
