Garmin pro Scott Martin is one of three former champions headed out on C...

After locking up the 2015 FLW Tour Angler of the Year at the Potomac River, Scott Martin hopes to ride his momentum all the way to the Forrest Wood Cup. If you were to say that Scott has a good chance at winning the 2015 Forrest Wood Cup at Lake Ouachita, you would be making a huge understatement. It was this same body of water and the same time of year that he took home the 2011 Forrest Wood Cup, winning by a 4-pound, 10-ounce margin.

We recently spoke with Scott to see how he thinks things will shake out during the Cup, which takes place August 20-23 in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Garmin: How did pre-practice go?

Scott Martin: Pre-practice was OK, but I didn’t do a whole lot of fishing. The little bit of fishing I did do, I caught some fish. I really just wanted to get comfortable with the lake, find some brush piles and find deep grass. I spent a lot of time looking at DownVü on my Garmin GPSMAP 7610xsv, and at other times, I was searching for brush piles using Panoptix. I marked a bunch of waypoints!

What is different about Ouachita now, compared to when you won the Cup in 2011?

The water is more stained this year and I think the fishing will be a little tougher than it was a few years ago.

Do you think anything will change between pre-practice and the time the tournament starts?

For the most part, it’ll stay the same. I expect the bite to be pretty similar to what it was a few weeks ago during pre-practice.

How will Garmin electronics help you in the Cup?

I’m really looking forward to utilizing Panoptix. It was a key piece of my success during several tournaments this year, and ultimately, the key to winning Angler of the Year. It gives me the ability to be very efficient and make very accurate casts.

Will you be fishing shallow or deep, and how do you think brush piles and grass will play into the winning pattern?

This year, it will be a complete mixture of shallow fish and deep fish. I believe the guy who wins will have some shallow fish to be caught and deep fish. I don’t think it can be won simply fishing just one or the other. Brush and grass will both be a factor.

Weight to win?

Under 60 pounds.

Good luck, Scott, and thanks for taking the time to speak with us!
