ANT+ is wireless technology that plays nice with others

A recent comment from a Garmin blog reader asked whether the Forerunner 405 will work with other manufacturers’ heart rate monitors or foot pods. The answer is yes, as long as those devices have ANT+ (formerly called ANT+Sport) wireless technology. The beauty of ANT+ is interoperability. Before you choke on the word, just know that it makes your life easier. If you have a device with ANT+ technology, it can talk with another ANT+ device. For example, if you own a Garmin Forerunner 305 (which comes with a heart rate monitor that uses ANT+) and you want to upgrade to the 405, you can purchase the model that comes without heart rate and simply use the heart rate monitor you already own. Same goes for the foot pod, an accessory that measures your foot stride so you can use Forerunner indoors when GPS is unavailable. The foot pod can also be used with the Forerunner 50, our non-GPS sport watch, to calculate distance indoors or out. Note that the compatibility extends to accessories with ANT+ (formerly called ANT+Sport), but not necessarily components with simply “ANT” technology.
