Here is how you know you are not ready to comeback after a life threatening event. April 23rd, 2013, I ended up in the hospital with blood clots throughout my lungs. The Doctor said I had to be on blood thinners for six months and no biking outside or racing. Hearing that as a professional athlete is a hard thing to swallow. I am a little stubborn and thought when I was in Italy I’d be able to climb the Stelvio if I went easy. However, my mind was ready but my body was showing me I was still not recovered….

I was supposed to bike 40km then climb the 20km Stelvio climb… that did not happen because I actually listened to my body. Notice the first part where we are descending and my HR was sky rocketing for what is normal. I couldn’t get it down no matter how easy I went or how I told myself I was ok. So I stopped sad, to not climb the Stelvio, but happy to be alive and live another day and try it again another time. Garmin played a big role in keeping me safe while on my road to recovery. Thanks Garmin!!!
