A Long And Rocky Road– Desi Davila

A couple days ago, I uploaded my last workout of a 13 week marathon segment to Garmin Connect. It was the perfect day to have a good day and gain a tiny bit more confidence before heading off to Berlin. On September 29th I’ll race the 40th edition of the BMW Berlin Marathon and plan to finish my first 26.2 race since January 2012.

It’s been a long and rocky road to this point since the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials, my last completed marathon, which included: making an Olympic team, dropping out of the Olympic games, recovering from a stress fracture, and rebuilding fitness. In the span of a year, I went from being in the best shape of my life to the worst. Suffice it to say that the past few months of marathon training have been very challenging.

Fortunately, that’s what I love about running, the challenge. There has been plenty of days where I hit the half way point of a workout and thought it would be best to just throw in the towel. Each time I had that thought I decided to make one more effort, one more push and not quit just yet, and every time I was rewarded for the effort. With the help of teammates or discovering I had a little more in me than I thought, I have been able to tackle the second half of my workouts and walk away with some positive feelings about the whole thing.

I can’t say exactly what it means about my fitness or how I will perform in Berlin. I can say that when things get tough, as they always do in the marathon, I’ll be ready. As awful as difficult and challenging situations can seem, when we are willing to change our perspective just a touch, those situations can serve as great opportunities.

Here is a quote I love:

“Opportunities to find deeper powers within ourselves come when life seems most challenging.” – Joseph Campbell
